Material Handling

Foundries, secondary smelters, aluminum recycling plants, steel mills, cement plants, etc. depend on equipment that can move hot, heavy, dusty, and abrasive materials around the clock without unplanned downtime. Bulk material handling systems designed specifically for these severe-duty conditions protect production schedules, reduce maintenance costs, and keep operators safe, all while standing up to continuous, high-temperature service that would quickly wear out conventional conveyors.

Lathrop Trotter is proud to represent Magaldi, a global leader in engineered material handling systems for the metals and metalcasting industries, bringing nearly a century of bulk handling experience to Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and beyond.

Magaldi Material Handling Solutions

Magaldi has spent decades developing conveyor and material handling technology for some of the toughest operating environments in industry. At the core of its product line are the Superbelt® and Ecobelt® steel belt conveyor systems. These patented designs are based around overlapping steel pans securely fastened to a double-wire steel mesh. Unlike conventional rubber or apron conveyors, the overlapping-pan, multi-link construction gives the belt built-in redundancy and damage tolerance, so a single damaged pan does not take the system down.

Magaldi’s conveyors are engineered to handle hot, heavy, dusty, and highly abrasive materials without failure. Magaldi systems deliver high reliability, low power demand, and minimal maintenance even under continuous, around-the-clock operation. The result is greater uptime, lower operating costs, and safer material flow throughout the plant, benefits that carry across every industry Magaldi serves, from ferrous and non-ferrous foundries to steel mills and aluminum recycling operations.

  • Rising global competition is pushing foundries to lower production costs while operating as cleanly and efficiently as possible. Magaldi’s foundry equipment is engineered to meet both goals at once through streamlining sand, casting, and scrap handling while reducing operations and maintenance costs and maintaining strong safety and environmental performance.

For ferrous foundries, decades of bulk material handling experience have made Magaldi a benchmark supplier for moving sand, castings, and mold-line by-products reliably through continuous production. For non-ferrous (aluminum) foundries, Magaldi combines that same engineering depth with a focus on quality and value, supplying heavy-duty scrap conveyors that move sprues, gating, risers, casting trim, and rejects to balers, shredders, or remelt furnaces with far greater durability than fork trucks, rubber belts, or apron conveyors.

  • As the shift toward a lower-carbon economy accelerates, secondary aluminum production is playing a growing role in meeting future demand and efficient scrap handling is essential to keeping the production line moving. Magaldi supplies best-in-class conveyors that handle cold scrap (both new production scrap and old post-consumer scrap) upstream and downstream of sorting and size-reduction, as well as hot aluminum shreds coming out of the decoating process, helping smelters improve throughput while lowering energy consumption, heat losses, and maintenance costs.

For secondary aluminum smelters and recycling plants specifically, Magaldi’s bulk material handling systems go beyond simply moving scrap from one point to another. They are engineered to streamline production flow, increase equipment availability, and enhance overall plant efficiency and are exactly what these operations need to stay competitive.

  • Steel mills and scrap metal processing plants operate in some of the harshest conditions and Magaldi’s heavy-duty steel belt conveyors are built specifically to work seamlessly in them. Across steel mills, direct iron reduction plants, and iron sinter plants, these conveyors preheat, transport, feed, unload, dump, and weigh hard-to-handle materials. Their combination of benefits set them apart from traditional material handling technologies by offering high process reliability and availability, class-leading performance, increased productivity, greater process control, safe and very quiet operation, minimum energy consumption, negligible wear, low maintenance and O&M costs, high environmental standards, and long service life.

Magaldi’s steelmaking product lines includes EAF scrap infeed conveyor systems, heavy scrap conveyors for scrap sorting and preparation, shear scrap conveyors, mill scale conveyors, and ladle slag conveyors and others that are purposely-built for the specific hot, heavy, and abrasive material streams found at each stage of steel production.
